FTP cable is more expensive than unshielded cable, but less expensive (and less fragile) than STP cable. FTP Ethernet cables: There is just one layer of shielding, normally foil, surrounding the package of conductors, and each twisted pair is not individually protected.STP cables are the most expensive, thickest and most difficult to work with. Each of the four twisted pairs is usually wrapped in foil or tightly-braided wire, and the entire group of conductors is protected by another foil or braided layer of shielding. STP Ethernet cables: These are fully-shielded.Those cases usually require the use of shielded Ethernet cables there are two basic types. Interference caused by high-powered motors on equipment or elevators, large fluorescent lighting installations or heavy machinery will blast right through UTP Ethernet cables and have a major impact on data transfer and speed. You might also assume that since the twisted pairs protect against interference, shielding would be superfluous.
